Summer Activities at Victoria Park Community Centre

The centre organised a series of activities aimed at young people 8 to 13 years and what a great success it was!

Below are our photographs showing our young people (and helpers!) having fun.

SPECIAL EFFECTS MAKE-UP ARTISTS IN THE MAKING!

Our third summer Dreamscheme summer activity workshop proved great fun when Jane Leakey from the Fat Cat Theatre Company helped local children to produce fake wounds worthy of any TV set.

Our Circus Skills Workshop proved a hit!

Youngsters from the area agreed that the circus skills workshop was great fun and clearly there are a lot of potential circus entertainers.

So what’s next for Victoria Park?

The centre youth team will be working with the local Youth Service to set up a weekly club for young 8 to 13 year old young people. We are talking about when, where and what we are doing and as soon as we have more details we will be in contact with those who attended the summer sessions. Information will be placed on our website, FACEBOOK page and in our centre brochure. Leading on from this our Dreamscheme will provide opportunities for even more fun.

What is the Dreamscheme?

The story began in Sheffield with a dream devised by Sheffield couple Geoff and Kate King between 1995 and 1998. Over three years, around one hundred young people were involved in community projects.

The projects were WORK based projects and included environmental, social, creative and personal development tasks. This WORK allowed young people to earn POINTS that could be spent on TRIPS and activities of their choice. The scheme provided a new sense of belonging and enabled the young people to serve their community.

More local to Victoria Park The Highbridge Dreamscheme started in January 2009. Two Police Community Support Officers, and by working with local residents the Highbridge Local Action Team, funding was granted and the Highbridge cheme began and more recently a scheme has been set up in Burnham on Sea.

Meet the Dreamscheme Team

A small team of volunteers from the community supported by the Community Centre Manager Doreen Baker will organise activities. All volunteers and staff are CRB checked, are registered First Aiders and we have a Safeguarding Policy in place. We will of course receive lots of advide and guidance from our Youth Service colleagues.

Doreen Baker our Community Centre Manager has worked in the Charity and Not-for-Profit Sector for over thirty years both as a volunteer and member of staff. A former Chief Executive for a Not-for-Profit organisation Doreen joined us in June 2009 bringing her happily back to working in a community. As a Chartered Marketer she hopes to use her passion for marketing and community work to promote the Centre and provide a range of activities and services for the local residents and businesses.
