Community Safety

Fires caused by makeup/shaving mirrors

During the month of April 2011 DSFRS attended two fires within a week of each other which were determined to have been caused by sunlight reflecting onto the magnified glass of a makeup/shaving mirror.

The first incident occurred in the home of an elderly couple living in Plymstock. The time of the incident was at 18:30 and the residents were alerted by smoke detectors operating. The early warning resulting in a prompt attendance by DSFRS and the damage was kept to a minimum.

The second incident occurred in Salcombe in the morning, crews were called out at 07:37. By the time the fire crews were alerted to this fire and due to the difficult access delaying fire fighting activities, the fire was well developed and this resulted in extensive damage to the multi storey luxury residence, causing hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Detailed fire investigation at this scene concluded the most probable cause was due to a makeup mirror which had been placed in the east facing window of an unoccupied bedroom. It is interesting to note that these fires occurred at opposite ends of the day.

Although these types of fires are rare, there are certain times of the year – predominantly in spring or autumn when the potential for such fires is heightened due to the angle of the sunlight entering windows. DSFRS advises residents to take extra care, particularly with convex/concave mirrors, especially when the sun is low on the horizon.

Keep mirrors out of contact with direct sunlight and never put them on window sills
